Tom Mulcair went on to become the first NDP MP in the province of Quebec to be elected in a general election. He was first elected as the MP for Outremont in the 2007 by-election, and re-elected in 2008 and 2011.

Along with the strong NDP team, Jack Layton and Tom Mulcair worked tirelessly and helped to create a spectacular breakthrough in Quebec on May 2, 2011 - making Canada's New Democrats the Official Opposition for the first time in history

Port Coquitlam NDP Candidate

Mark Ireland was the NDP candidate who ran for a Riding in the last election for Port Coquitlam. Even though Mark Ireland didn’t end up winning the election (which was won by James Moore and the Conservatives) he ended up showing how the New Democratic Party is a fantastic party, which thinks for the good of the community with its excellent community service tradition throughout with years. Mark Ireland is a local Port Moody resident who spent the majority of 20 years as a training manager for a software company. The main reason why Mark Ireland wanted to represent the Tri-Cities was because he hated the overall attitudes the conservatives and liberals had towards Parliament. He also didn’t see those two parties wanting to make any changes that would help the people of the tri-Cities in there daily lives which was one of his main goal if he was to be elected. Mark Ireland was a man who wanted to make changes for the better of everyone by cooperating and compromising with everyone to get things done for all of us. He still strongly believes that if his NDP had got elected instead of the Conservatives, Tri-Cites would be a more peaceful, cooperative and a better place to live in then what it is now.

As premier of Saskatchewan, Tommy Douglas made history by leading the first social democratic government ever elected in North America. After 17 years as Premier, he made history again as the founding leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada in 1961. Now with Thomas Mulcair leading, the NDP have a good chance of winning elections.

History

The New Democratic Party is a major social democratic federal political party in Canada.  The NDP was founded in 1961 out of the merger of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and Canadian Labour Congress (CLC).  One influential person in the creation of the NDP was Tommy Douglas.  After almost 17 years as the Premier of Saskatchewan, he became the founding leader of the NDP in 1961.  During Tommy Douglas’s time as leader of the New Democratic party, he helped ensure the introduction of Medicare, public pensions, and the expansion of Canada’s public safety net. All these contributions were huge for an up and coming party in Canada since people started to see the benefits that the NDP provided such as pension, and medical care. Through out the years the New Democratic Party has had many changes such as becoming as one of the more powerful parties by being the official opposition in government. One of the biggest achievements for the NDP in there history is being the official opposition in the current Canadian Parliament. Threw out its history, the NDP has become a main stay in Canadian government by showing citizens that they are a people first party. Now with Thomas Mulcair leading, the NDP have a good chance to continue growing as a Party and to win many upcoming elections.

Throughout the years the New Democratic Party has earned the reputation of having Social Liberalism as there Ideological roots. The NDP have always thought about what’s best for the people. From the time Tommy Douglas created Medicare and pensions, the NDP have believed the citizens of Canada need to be protected. The NDP and Social Liberalism share the same idea’s which include Economic issues such as unemployment, health care, and education. They both also believe that social justice, and Civil Rights are very important in a democratic government like the NDP. The NDP group are also the most left handed Party in Canada meaning that among other things change is good if it makes things for the better. This all proves that the citizens of Canada are the number one priority of the NDP and why the New Democratic Party is a great option for Canadians to vote for in the present and future.
